History
Although built around mid 17th century there is little history of Martha's until 1821 when the house only occupied about three-quarters of the present site. There was an alley-way to the north of the property which was filled when the house was extended in the late 1800s and converted into two separate dwellings. There have been a variety of owners including an agricultural labourer, a leading member of the Independent Congregation in Oxford Street, Moreton, who later became a senior deacon for 20 years, a groom and a waiter. In between the wars we are told a room was made available one day a week, normally a Tuesday, to a visiting dentist!
When the provisional grading list was drawn up for Moreton in 1952, it was a single property, Yetholme, described as "C17. Rubble. Cotwold stone roof, 2 storeys and dormers. 2 windows (3- and 4- light stone mullions with dripmoulds)".
When the definitive list was drawn up in 1983 it was described as -
"Gavel Cottage formerley listed as Yetholme (two dwellings). Mid c17 restored two and a half storeys, coursed and squared rubble; Cotswold stone slate roof. Two hipped dormers with leaded casements. Two windows with chamfered stone mullions in rebated surrounds and with drips, 3-lights on first floor, 4-light (restored in place of former windows) on ground floor. Plain central doorway with drip; recessed doors."
